Museum study visit of Te Manawa (covering the Manawatu region)

Short Museum visit and afternoon tea (Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom – new museum collaboration between Maori, the NZ Dutch community and the local council = NZ’s newest museum, opened December 2017)

Potential Pre-Conference Study Tour November 1 – 3
Assumptions
• This would be for a smaller group, probably just international participants, perhaps with accompanying others
• An opportunity for international participants to gain insights into a range of NZ museums and especially the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi and its contemporary implications for the museum and heritage sectors
• An opportunity to visit a beautiful part of NZ
• Only offered/possible if sufficient demand to make it financially viable
Travel Days One and Two and Three = museum visits = coach travel from Auckland to Northland by east coast, returning to Auckland by the West Coast with two nights in the Bay of Islands (probably Paihia).

Morning departure – Leave Auckland by coach (Early start)
Museum study visit & coffee stop at Wellsford or Waipu
Coffee/tea on arrival, view exhibitions, collections/facilities with staff
Travel to Whangarei
Museum study visit & lunch stop at Whangarei – Kiwi North and/or Whangarei Art Gallery including lunch (or picnic lunch)

Travel by bus or walk to Waitangi Treaty Grounds
Museum study visit and coffee break at Waitangi Museum, Treaty House, Maori performance, coffee and lunch (or picnic lunch) = opportunity to consider key concepts behind NZ’s bicultural museum practice
Travel Return to Paihia for ferry to Russell
Museum study visit & tea and dinner (Russell Museum)

Dinner at Duke of Marlborough, NZ’s first capital
Travel return to Paihia by ferry

Travel – options = Bus and ferry to Rawene via Kophukohu ferry or Bus Kaitaia (Kaitai might make for a long day)
Museum study visit and coffee stop at Clendon House in Rawene or Te Ahu in Kaitaia
Travel to Tane Mahuta, Break for picnic lunch
View Tane Mahuta = revered native kauri tree (exceptional size and age)
Travel to Matakohe
Museum study visit & afternoon tea (Kauri Museum at Matakohe – history of settlement of Auckland)
Travel – Return to Auckland
Overnight – at individual’s conference accommodation

Potential Post-Conference workshops on November 10 & 11
Promising location: the University in Wellington
a) Nov 10 – Training Showcase Day = practical demonstrations and discussions on actual training practice – design and deilvery of training on related topics
b) Nov 11 – Graduate museum studies research day = new and emerging researchers (often mature students with considerable museum professional experience) present their research and shows the future directions, relevant themes to our professional field – both theoretical and practical
Both would be a low cost event, with a symbolic only extra fee.
c) Assistance on visits to museums in the Wellington region which could be the same days or a separate day on the Monday 12 November
