Museums facing their environmental and social responsibilities: towards an ethical and sustainable model

ICOM France and its partners ICOM Canada, ICOM Spain, ICOM Lebanon, ICOM-CC, ICTOP, NATHIST, ICOM Arab, ICOM LAC, and the University of Quebec Trois Rivières are launching a new series of debates dedicated to the development of an ethical and sustainable model in museums.

This series of meetings/debates is intended for museum professionals and will include contributions from colleagues who can share innovative experiences in the field of sustainable development. This notion is understood here in its ecological and societal dimensions.
This cycle will take the form of 6 participative sessions on a digital platform from May to November 2023.

The cycle is designed with the financial support of ICOM, the Délégation générale à la langue française et aux langues de France and the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.

Session 1
Sustainable architecture and built heritage
Wednesday 24th May 2023
17:30 – 19:00 (CEST/Paris time)

The built heritage has many assets (evidence of old building techniques, old materials etc.), but also constraints. These constraints are particularly evident in terms of energy renovation. This session will review the methods and tools aimed at integrating the requirements of the ecological transition, particularly concerning renovation, but also the difficulties encountered.
It will also shed light on different modes of more sustainable construction:
• Lui Ning, architect, co-founder of the company Building for Climate
• Annelies Cosaert, from the sustainability unit of IRPA (Royal Institute for Artistic Heritage) – Belgium
• Danilo Forleo, Head of Preventive Conservation, Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon
• ….
The session will be moderated by Ann Bourgès, Secretary General of ICOMOS France and leader of the “climate change” working group, and Hélène Vassal, member of the ICTOP board and Director of Collections Support at the Louvre Museum.
It will be held simultaneously in French, English and Spanish. It will be recorded and rebroadcast by ICOM France and its partners.
